Chauvin, convicted of Floyd’s murder, was stabbed in jail

Chauvin, convicted of Floyd’s murder, was stabbed in jail. Former police officer Derek Chauvin, who was convicted of killing George Floyd, a black American youth, was attacked in prison.

Chauvin was incarcerated in a federal prison in Tucson, Arizona. Local media reported that another inmate attacked Chauvin with a knife yesterday afternoon inside the correctional facility. Jail guards almost immediately rescued Chauvin, a former Minnesota police officer, and admitted him to a hospital. Chauvin’s condition is said to be stable for now. The identity of the attacker has not been disclosed by the police. The motive of the attack is not clear.

25 May 2020 Floyd was accused of tampering with a $20 bill in a department store in Minneapolis, Minnesota. That’s when the police were called to deal with the matter. Allegedly, the 47-year-old white police officer Shavin pressed the young man’s neck for at least 9 minutes by throwing him on the ground so that Floyd could not escape. Floyd was heard saying ‘I can’t breathe’ in a video taken by nearby residents. Floyd died soon after. And after that, thousands of people rose up against racism and discrimination. Not only America, but the whole world, there is a storm of criticism. Allegations arose that, not only in Floyd’s case, but also in many cases in the past, Minnesota police have engaged in such racist behavior against blacks.

When the investigation started, the court found Chauvin guilty on two counts. He was sentenced to 21-and-a-half years on one count and 22 years on the other count under provincial and central laws. Chauvin was previously incarcerated in a state prison in Minnesota. He was transferred to the Tucson Correctional Facility a few months ago. Chauvin was allotted medium security in that jail.

However, Chauvin’s lawyer, Eric Nelson, had been pleading for his client to be kept in a separate cell since last year. He claimed that Shavin’s life is in danger. At any moment he can be attacked inside the prison. That fear came true this time.
