Real Madrid welcomed the new year with a win. Judd Bellingham’s side beat Mallorca 1-0 at home in La Liga on Wednesday night to stay top of the table. However, despite Alvaro Morata’s stunning hat-trick, Atletico de Madrid lost 3-4 to Girona.
Real dominated from the start against Mallorca. In the 21st minute, Vinicius Junior’s shot from Luka Modric’s pass narrowly missed the target. In the 37th minute, the shot of the Brazilian star was saved by goalkeeper Predrag Ryković with impeccable skill. Rodrigo wasted the opportunity. Mallorca had a chance to go ahead ten minutes into the second half. Almedia Costa’s shot from about 25 yards hits the post. In the 69th minute Rodrigo’s shot was somehow saved by the Mallorcan goalkeeper. Brahim Díaz’s head hits the post after being called out. At 78 minutes, the wait is finally over. Antonio Rudiger headed in Modric’s corner to make it 1-0. The German star scored his second goal in La Liga after joining Real in 2022.
Real topped the La Liga table with 48 points from 19 matches after beating Mallorca. 48 points in 19 games for Girona, who beat Atletico to second place. Real is number one due to the goal difference.
La Liga was in high gear for Wednesday night’s match between Girona and Atletico. Valeri Fernandes gave Girona the lead at home within two minutes of the start of the game.
